Gardening Business - Ideas and Starting Small

Gardening business

If you are like me and have romanticized the idea of owning a gardening business, it is time to become a realist and do it. That may not be the best use of those terms but getting started is not as hard as you may think and unlike many businesses it can be done for minimal cost if you start small. All you need is an interest in gardening. If you are not sure how to begin loads of information is available in books and online and it is easy to come up with ideas.

For example you could start a backyard nursery growing landscape plants, even specializing in certain types, or you may start a market garden, grow herbs, woody ornamental, plants that can be used to create value added products, flowers, hydroponics, certified organic garden, heirlooms, seed production to supply seed companies and on and on. There are so many you could specialize in or you could run a greenhouse or garden center with a little of everything. Value added products are things like jelly from berries, herbal lotions and soaps, or baskets made from dried grasses that have been dyed different colors.

The key is to start small unless you have the funds available. I am always looking for ways to create additional income but I never seem to have enough to get started. The good thing about this idea is you can start for very little. To start a backyard nursery you could take cuttings from plants that you are sure of the identity and propagate them in a small flat of sand under a 10 gallon aquarium painted with white stripes to keep it from getting too hot. Within a few weeks they would root and you could easily have 100 rooted cuttings to sell as they are or pot up and grow a little longer to make more profit. If you reinvest your profit you could slowly expand until you reach your goals. I highly recommend starting small and not going into debt. Mistakes won't be as costly while you are learning the industry and getting a feel for supply and demand.

There are many outlets for selling your product. Farmer's markets are a good place to start. You could also sell from home, a roadside stand, online and plant festivals. If you decide to grow flowers, direct marketing to florists, grocery stores or farmer's markets work. Produce can be sold directly to restaurants in addition to groceries, roadside stands and farmer's markets.

Whatever you decide, don't delay any longer. Get started today. Choose a gardening idea that you are interested in and start researching propagation and production. Buy seeds or take cuttings. There is always something you can do each day. You should work on your business each day and reinvest your profits to continue to grow. Don't forget to check out all the tax benefits you get from owning your own business. You may be able to deduct the cost of the plants you purchase for your own yard if you use these as stock plants to take cuttings. I have given you many ideas and even an example of how to start small with little cash. I wish you good soil and cooperating weather.
